Omega 3 - Can It Help You Lose Weight?
Eating fats can help you lose weight! Shall I believe this? It’s silly, isn’t it? But there’s truth to this and it’s backed by solid scientific evidence.
To help you understand this more clearly, let us consider some basic ideas about obesity first. Do you know the formula for gaining weight? It’s simple - eat more calories than you burn and you’ll gain weight. And relatively, if you eat less calories than you burn, you’ll lose weight.
Secondly, we eat all kinds of fats – everything from the good, the bad and the ugly. While some have unquestionable nutritional benefits to the body (such as omega 3 and omega 6 oils), the rest merely contains any nutritive values at all.
What’s worse is that these fats and oils not only encourage weight gain, they can even be hazardous to your health. These cancer-causing, artery-clogging and death-inducing fats include hydrogenated oils, trans-fatty acids, saturated fats, and processed vegetable oils. You don’t have any need for them so check them off your list before it’s too late!
That brings us back to the question, “What is the best fat to help us lose weight?”. The answer - omega 3 fatty acid! New research published in the Journal of Nutrition (vol. 136: 2965-2969) has shown that DHA helps stop the conversion or pre-fat cells (preadipocytes) to fat cells (adipocytes) by “killing” them.
Because of this anti-obesity effect of DHA, we have more reasons to add fish and omega 3 fish oil supplements into our diets. However, please be advised that this finding is still in the preliminary stages and a number of related research is still being made to establish the validity of the claim.
For the time being, it would be advisable to continue eating more omega 3 fish fat, and live a healthy and active lifestyle to lose more body fat. Here’s to your fit and healthy future ahead!
