We’re all guilty of it – negative self talk. Someone complements your appearance and and to yourself you think, Are you crazy? I look like a slag – or something to that effect. Have you ever uttered it out loud? That’s even worse. Most of us have done it more often than we’d like to admit. Negative thinking can be damaging not only to our self-esteem, but can begin a cycle of thought and behavior which negatively impacts our own perception of events in our lives.

Take me as an example. I research an area. Read about it. Construct a perfect blog post. I’m confident it’s a Pulizter Prize winner. As soon as I publish it, I notice one tiny error. I berate myself even though the error was not significant. While I get good feedback I continually say/think it’s not so hot. My negativity has minimized the entire effort, and magnified one area of it.

What steps can we take to avoid this pattern? Take a step back and look at the project objectively. Not only did you complete it in an efficient manner, but it will become the template for future projects. Forget about the mistake; think about what you’ve achieved.

Negative thought patterns are popular around the holidays or any major undertaking. You look around and decide it’s just too much; you can’t do it; why bother. Stop! Take a deep breath and consider dividing up the tasks. Enlist the aid of your family to help by assigning each one a specific job. Once you begin the process of prioritizing, you will feel better and it will be accomplished.

Let’s say you’ve started a diet. One day, you have a craving for a particular dessert. You quickly decide your diet is over, and it wasn’t worth the effort. You walk over to the mirror and utter to yourself, I’m fat, and that’s all there is to it.

Au contraire mon ami! Setting yourself up for failure by thinking negatively about the way you look does not solve the immediate problem. Instead, admit to cheating; promise you’ll try harder, and allow positive thoughts to guide you through it.

Probably the most intensely negative thought processes are experienced by teenagers. These are people who are in the thrall of their hormones. Perhaps they are unhappy with school, or peer pressure has made them act in a way that cultivates anger. While they may not mean what they say, verbal self abuse is still a sign which requires immediate intervention. A thought becomes a seed which could germinate into the act itself.

Now that you’re aware of it, it’s up to you to ensure that any hint of negativity is purged from your thought process and to avoid imprinting unwelcome thoughts onto our family or friends. Remember, you attract what you think about.

The dreaded cold sore, aka fever blister, is caused by the herpes simplex virus. Besides being quite contagious, the virus can be resistant to treatment–especially during its dormant phase. Cold sores usually last about seven to ten days. They start out with a tingling feeling around the outside of your lip and morph into red, raised, fluid-filled blisters within a day or two. Cold sores can also form inside your mouth, on your nose, or on your chin and take as long as twenty days to develop after exposure.

There are two types of herpes simplex viruses to be aware of: Type 1 and type 2. Type 1 causes cold sores, and type 2 is the genital version. Either type can cause sores on both the facial areas and the genitals though. Once you’ve gotten a cold sore at least once, the virus stays in your skin and can crop up again throughout the years. Sometimes stress or menstruation can trigger outbreaks.

Cold sores often clear up on their own though, unless you have a weakened immune system. Herbal approaches to treatment include disinfecting the sores, and helping the immune system fight the virus.

Black Walnut is the herb of choice to use for cold sores and fever blisters. This herb is an antiseptic which is high in natural iodine, and can be used both externally and internally to treat cold sores. Use black walnut extract to paint the cold sores several times each day, and take dried black walnut herb internally as well.

Aloe Vera gel is another popular herb to use for treating cold sores. It too can be applied to the sores several times each day, and the juice can be drunk as well.

Comfrey salve will help heal the cold sores as well. This is a cell proliferant which helps your body heal very quickly. Prick the cold sores and apply comfrey salve externally for best results.

Remember that cold sores and fever blisters are quite contagious though, particularly when a sore is present, so you should avoid contact with babies and anyone who has a weakened immune system from diseases such as HIV and Diabetes.

When you have active sores, be sure to keep your hands clean, and avoid contact with other areas of your body such as the eyes and genital areas. Wash your hands often and be sure to sterilize or replace your toothbrush when outbreaks occur, and of course avoid kissing anyone until you’re healed.

Organic food used to be the exclusive domain of health food stores, but it has gone so mainstream that nowadays most grocery stores stock at least some organic produce. As the general public has become more educated about environmental toxins and pesticides, organic food continues to increase in popularity.

It is much easier to buy organic food today than it was a decade ago. The popularity of these products has made a lot of money for the organic food business, leading them to increase production. Chains of health food stores are flourishing thanks to the organic trend, and mass merchandisers are starting to stock up on organic foods.

The key selling point of organic foods is that they are healthier than their conventionally produced counterparts. By definition, organic products are produced without the use of any man-made chemicals, including hormones, antibiotics, or synthetic pesticides. Organic meat is obtained from livestock that is fed an organic diet, and so is organic milk. As defined here, it would seem that organic is synonymous with healthy. But that is not always true.

Truly organic animal products are certainly safer than those produced by traditional methods. They do not contain the toxins that can be found in regular ones, and in beef there is a much lower risk of mad cow disease. You also do not have to worry about ingesting antibiotics, which may cause antibiotic resistance.

When it comes to baby food, buying organic is definitely the way to go. Babies are more susceptible to ill effects from the pesticides and heavy metals contained in inorganic foods. The preparation of baby food also involves condensing the fruits, vegetables, and meats used, resulting in higher concentrations of these things. For these reasons, organic baby food is generally considered much safer.

Organic fruits and vegetables are often heralded for their lack of pesticides. While this is certainly a good thing, organic is not necessarily a lot better in this regard. Some fruits and vegetables do not retain pesticide residues easily, so they are generally safe as long as they are washed thoroughly before eating. These include avocados, broccoli, cauliflower, sweetcorn, mangos, onions and pineapples. However, buying organic apples, celery, cherries, grapes, peaches, potatoes, and berries is usually a good idea. These items tend to carry high levels of pesticides.

Processed organic foods may or may not be healthier than conventional ones. Many of them use a combination of organic and inorganic ingredients. They also tend to lose nutrients during manufacturing, decreasing their health value. For the healthiest possible product, look for labels that say “USDA organic” and read the nutrition facts on the container.

Organic seafood rarely has any added value. That is because the USDA has not developed standards for it. Seafood labeled organic may contain all sorts of harmful substances, yet it is legal for them to be labeled as such in most states as long as the USDA name or the word “certified” is not used.

In addition to going organic, consider going local. Remember that locally grown food takes less gas to transport it to market which means less environmental pollution. When you do buy organic food, it is important to make sure that the food you’re buying is 100 percent organic. If it isn’t, you may not be getting all of the health benefits that you expect.

If you’re trying to live a healthy lifestyle, one obvious consideration should be organic food. Naturally, food processed with out chemicals would seem like a no brainer. However, in today’s economy people have to make hard choices. Produce at your local grocery store is likely to be much cheaper than that purchased at a health food store. Is organic food really worth the cost?

By definition, organic foods are produced without using man-made chemicals. This means that they do not have the hormones, antibiotics, synthetic pesticides, and other harmful substances that can be found in non-organic foods. This is one reason that people buy organic, but not the only one. Many proponents of organic food are looking to buy foods that are produced locally in an effort to boost the local economy, support the ethical treatment of livestock, or reduce the use of fossil fuels used for the foods’ delivery. While some organic food producers share these ideals, many of them do not.

Problems with Organic Products

The growing popularity of organic foods has made it more difficult to find foods that are produced entirely locally. Mass production has necessitated the use of some ingredients that may not be available in large enough quantities locally. For example, companies that use organic milk in their products often have a hard time getting it from suppliers in the immediate area. They may use powdered organic milk from distant locations in order to keep their ingredients pure.

There are also some so-called organic products that aren’t really any safer. Certain fruits and vegetables, including asparagus, bananas, broccoli, pineapples, and sweet peas rarely contain significant amounts of pesticides in their conventionally grown form. Processed foods that claim to be made with organic ingredients often contain inorganic ones as well. And organic seafood and cosmetics are notorious for having the same health dangers as conventional ones.

How Much More does Organic Cost?

Prices for organic foods vary substantially. You might pay anywhere from 10 percent more to twice as much for an organic product. Mass producers of organic products tend to incur much higher costs in an effort to keep the ingredients pure, and because of that they charge a premium.

You can often save money by getting on the mailing list of your local health food store. This will give you access to special deals and coupons. Also try growing your own. Even a small container garden will keep you in fixed for salad throughout the summer. Your fruit and vegetable choices should be limited to what is in season, but the lower cost and fresher taste are worth it to many consumers. You can be sure that you’re buying locally by patronizing farmer’s markets or going directly to the source.

When determining whether an organic product is worth the extra cost, it is important to know as much as you can about it. Many people make the mistake of assuming that all organic foods are created equal, and they are not. Checking out providers and reading labels can open our eyes to any shortcomings that an organic food may have. In many cases, your best bet is to buy locally for better prices and higher standards.

Science is starting to catch up with what many people already know — probiotics are beneficial to health. Although they have been in existence for a very long time, mainstream medicine only recently begun to acknowledge their benefits. This has led to their appearance in a number of new food products, and an increased awareness of their natural presence in products that were already on store shelves.

Although probiotic supplements are also increasing in popularity, they are not regulated very well. Poorly designed supplements may not have enough beneficial bacteria in them to make a difference. They also are not as conducive to the survival of the bacteria as food sources that contain them naturally.

Yogurt is one of the most recognizable sources of probiotics. It naturally contains a substantial amount of bacteria. But if you’re counting on getting your daily dose of beneficial bacteria from yogurt, it is important to read the label. It should contain live and active cultures in order to provide the maximum benefit.

Yogurt is not the only dairy product that contains probiotics. Others include kefir, acidophilus milk and buttermilk. Dairy products provide a good environment for friendly bacteria, protecting them from acid and bile. Dairy foods also contain prebiotics, which are compounds that stimulate the growth and activity of probiotics.

Fermented vegetables are also good sources of probiotics. Some examples of these include sauerkraut, kimchi, and curtido. Salted gherkins and brine-cured olives contain lots of beneficial bacteria as well. Those that are sold commercially, however, often go through processes that kill the bacteria in them. These processes include pasteurization and the addition of preservatives such as sodium benzoate.

Probiotic juices are also beginning to show up in grocery stores. They contain bacteria that have been shown to promote immunity and aid in digestion. These bacteria are also believed to be beneficial for sufferers of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Food manufacturers have begun to add probiotics to a number of foods that do not naturally contain them. These include cereals, chocolate bars, and dairy drinks. In some countries a variety of probiotic beverages are on the market, and there is even a brand of probiotic ice cream. With these options becoming available in more and more places, it is becoming much easier to include probiotics in our diets.

The medical establishment has only recently begun to take probiotics seriously, but the studies that have been done are very promising. Probiotics have a low incidence of side effects, and they have been shown to be good for the digestive system and bowels. They are also believed to help prevent, and in some cases treat, many types of infection. Including probiotics in your diet each day will not cause any ill effects, and it could significantly improve your health.
