Optometrists and Ophthalmologists Working Together.
Many people often ask me:
“What is the difference between coming to see us versus an Optometrist?”
It’s simple, Dr.Benjamin is a Board Certified Eye MD. In other words he has gone to medical school and then completed a specialized residency program in Ophthalmology. He is qualified to perform surgery on the eye such as LASIK and cataract extraction.
Optometrists have had 4 years of university training in a Optometry program to specifically diagnose and treat vision problems, eye diseases and related conditions, prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and medications to treat eye disorders. When necessary, they refer any complicated cases that involve surgery or specialized equipment to an Eye MD whether they are a General Ophthalmologist or a Retina Specialist.
Ophthalmologists and Optometrists frequently work together to treat a patient who may need LASIK, cataract or any other type of eye surgery. Through a process called “co-management”, a patient first visits their Optometrist who then refers them to an Opthalmologist for surgery. After the surgery is performed, the patient then returns to their Optometrist for follow up care.
