Law of Consent: 12 Spiritual Laws for Addiction Recovery
Over the next several weeks we’ll be posting about the 12 Spiritual Laws that our residents learn to understand and practice throughout their 90 day stay at the Mark Houston Recovery Center.
#1 The Spiritual Law of Consent
By giving others consent to help me look at my experience and my life I am able to arrive at some truth about my alcoholism and/or drug addiction that I can’t do on my own.
Embracing the Spiritual Law of Consent entails opening up to the “we” part of the 12 step recovery process. I have a disease of denial and that disease prevents me from seeing the truth about being powerless over alcohol and drugs.
The Law of Consent opens me to questions from men who have been down the road of recovery from their own addiction. It is through the use of these questions that force me to look at my own experience – not anyone else’s – that I begin to get a glimpse of my powerlessness.
It is from this position I can begin to recover.
