Why do So Many Relapse?
With so many treatment programs and so many having attended them, why do so many relapse With such high numbers of relapse cases, it’s possible to believe that recovery is unachievable for some addicts.
Living a life of permanent sobriety is possible for anyone. Recovery is a lifelong journey. Getting to a point of feeling in control and joyful in sobriety is long and arduous trek.
While short term treatment programs will be the solution for some, for others, a longer continuum of care is the only thing between a life of addiction and a life of fulfillment. The several week span of short term recovery programs isn’t enough time for most recovering addicts to gain the strength and experience necessary to live a life of permanent sobriety.
Extended care programs differ from short term treatment centers in several ways. The most significant of which is that residents are afforded the time to work through the processes of the 12-Step Program. Achieving a true realization of each of the 12 steps requires a journey of experiences, much more than an explanation of how the steps fit into the recovery process.
And though short term programs teach recovering addicts to take what they have learned about the 12 steps and put them to use, it is human nature to resist change. Attempting to change while battling addiction is even tougher. Extended care programs offer a safe place for those in recovery to work through the emotional hardships necessary to understand the teachings of each step.
In addition to a longer continuum of care, extended programs like ours, the Mark Houston Recovery Center, offer extended care programs to create a more fulfilling life – discovery-based programs designed to help individuals fill the void remaining once drugs or alcohol are gone.
Establishing routines of physical fitness and goal setting teach residents how to generate energy from within and how to take positive control of their bodies and their lives. Skills like financial sanity, leadership, and learning how we are accountable for our actions help addicts to cope in today’s world without turning to drugs and alcohol as a way to avoid challenges.
Recovery is possible for everyone and there are extended care treatment programs of various lengths and types exist to help every type of addict. First, we must stop blaming the program for our failures and seek out the type and length of program that will make the difference.
