Drug and Alcohol Addiction Becomes Mainstream

Not too long ago, drug and alcohol addiction was something everyone kept hush-hush—and perhaps that’s the reason that today nearly 3 out 4 people are affected by addiction either themselves or by someone in their life that suffers from a drug or alcohol addiction.

After years of allowing addiction in families bubble beneath the surface, tearing apart lives quietly while friends and family members tried their best to hide the problem from the world, it seems that society is desperate for a solution. Shows like A&E’s “Intervention” and HBO’s “The Addiction Project” indicate America’s desperation to believe in a positive outcome to the hell that is living with addiction.

People who are living with addiction find comfort in these shows because they feel a level of connection with the people on the shows because they are going through similar trauma. But acknowledging the depth of the problem is just the beginning of the solution.

These shows shed light on what it’s like to live with an addict, but also on the recovery process. Through these documentaries, viewers can see as close to first hand as possible, that serious addiction requires much more than a 30 day detox program. Addiction recovery is a process of changing life habits, rebuilding the body, rebuilding or building self esteem, accepting responsibility for actions, and learning to love life again.
