How Not to Catch a Cold and Enjoy Your Vacation
I had this conversation a few times this week with different people, so I feel inclined to write about it.
Imagine that you are really busy at work during the week, and all you can do is think about how great the weekend is going to be because you can finally relax. Or maybe you have a vacation coming up and you’re just trying to make it to that date when you can finally get away!
When the weekend, vacation, or holiday date comes… you get sick! How can life be so unfair?
Do you know that you are actually setting yourself up for illness if you are stressed out and don’t give yourself time to relax? When you just power through a busy schedule with no down time, you are unable to notice your body’s subtle signals that are trying to tell you that you might be getting sick. When the weekend/vacation comes, and you finally give yourself permission to relax, its already too late.
Usually, a very busy schedule before a vacation or holiday can’t be helped. However, its not inevitable that you will get sick, you just have to take care of yourself. Be sure to schedule time for yourself as if its just as important as everything else on your list.
Go to a pilates class, go for a walk, go out to dinner… do whatever you find lifts your spirits and takes your mind momentarily off of work. Get to bed early each night leading up to your time off. Even if you are not very tired, just readng in bed can help you chill out and allow your body the down-time that it needs to stay healthy and fight off germs and viruses.
Try to continue to eat healthfully when you are busy, turning to junk food when you’re stressed will not be beneficial when it comes time for your vacay. Snacking on foods rich in anti-oxidents, like blueberries, can help keep you well.
If you feel like you don’t have time to eat healthy, have something delivered so you don’t have to stop what you’re doing to prepare food.
If you do make it to your vacation date, unscathed by flu, it might be smart to pack a few cold remedies with you on your trip. Often times I find myself on the first day of a vacation and feeling like I’m coming down with a cold. I personally use Oscillococcinum every single time I start to feel sick, and it also keeps me well. I also rely on Echinacea tea- cups and cups of it- as soon as I start to feel unwell. Both of these remedies are not “proven” to work, but they work for me! And they work for millions of other people. Not only that, but they are easy to pack in your suitcase, so bring them with you. And be sure to include some over-the-counter cold medicines, too, just in case you do get sick and want to enjoy your trip as best you can!

These tips should help you learn how to listen to your body… and guarantee you a relaxing vacation.
