The Great Escape
Taking A Break
Yesterday I was exhausted from our busy weekend, but as mother of two small very active toddlers, naps are not possible and sitting down is a luxury. My days are generally filled from the time I wake to the time my head hits the pillow at night with household tasks.
But I needed a break and so decided to take the day off and enjoy my time with the boys (and my Dad) at Legoland. The result was that we all had a great time walking (okay, mostly running, after my 3 year old, Levi), talking and laughing on a sunny, breezy day and I wasn’t weighed down with responsibility.
Aside from the fact that Levi thought the entire amusement park was made solely for him and couldn’t understand lines or why other kids wanted to play in his house, we had fun. As I mentioned, he is 3.
The boys took naps on our way home in the car so I enjoyed some silent reflection time as I drove. I suppose it is as Oxford scholar, Robert Burton wrote, “A quiet mind cureth all,” because I felt energized by the solitude. All in all, it was a great day at Levi Land, errr… Legoland.

Latex Links?
One Step Closer
After blogging about my ice allergy, I once again searched the internet for more information to try to find a connection between it and fibromyalgia. I got a little more intense than usual and also searched for information on fibromyalgia and latex allergies.
My latex allergy is extreme and affects most areas of my life, even down to the candy I eat! I only eat paper or foil wrapped chocolate bars.
Imagine my surprise when I came across a group of people who understand what I’ve been living with - because they experience it, too. As I’ve started to receive responses from people who understand my fear of balloons, my worry about eating restaurant and packaged food because of possible latex exposure, my fear of going to the hospital more than whatever illness I may have, I felt suddenly relieved. I’m not the only one!
Maybe some of you have experienced this in other areas of your life. This has been life changing for me. My latex allergy has been an issue in my life since 1990 and has gotten worse with each exposure.
If fibromyalgia is somehow linked to this allergy, I am going to do my best to discover it. One doctor told me, “At least you know what you’ll die from” in reference to my latex allergy. We were talking about the dangers of car accidents for me - Would my med-alert bracelet be noticed? Would appropriate gloves, if any, be on hand? My local hospital couldn’t find them after 4 hours of searching last time and so sent me home. Or would I die on the side of the road while they considered all scenarios on how to treat me?
It’s not a good thing to think about. So, usually, I don’t. But today I want answers and I feel like I’m one step closer to getting them. Wish me knowledge and enlighten me, if you have information to help my quest. Thanks!

Not So Cool
“Ice Is Nice”
Remember Val Kilmer’s line in the movie “Real Genius”? That used to be my motto. Not anymore.
I’m allergic to ice. Weird, I know, but true.
My doctors call the condition cold urticaria and say it may possibly be somehow related to fibromyalgia. If you place an ice cube on my arm, I get hives. If I drink frozen drinks, my mouth starts itching. If I hold freezer packs or cold vegetables, my hands begin to swell, redden and itch uncontrollably. I was diagnosed after injuring my ankle and icing the injury. Instead of decreased swelling, I had an increase in pain, and my ankle reddened and grew 3 times its size!
I’ve been told that I could die from jumping in too cold of a swimming pool. I only use heated pools, now. I never drink slushy drinks or eat popsicles, and I really limit my ice cream exposure.
I’m drawing attention to this because it’s hot outside. It’s really hot and I WANT ICE!
Unfortunately my teen stepdaughter finds this “allergy” fun and reminds me anytime she sees me trying to add it to a drink. So, I’ve had to find a new way to stay cool this summer! My neighbor just recently introduced me to Metromint, an insanely cool drink that does the trick. My favorite flavor so far is Chocolatemint, with a chill factor of 2. Any other ideas, other than air conditioning and movie theaters?

Keeping Up With The Kids
Long, But Good, Day
I had a long day today. One of our sons is a Boy Scout and today was the annual Scout-o-Rama event. We subjected ourselves to hours of fun and not-so fun, depending on your perspective, in 90 degree Southern Californian heat. Free food, games, water, and spins on the wheel of fortune at various retailers were the highlights.
My 13 year old daughter won the cherry pie and watermelon eating contest which earned her a $25 gift card! Not to be outdone, my 9 year old daughter entered the pie eating contest as well and took 2nd place - she won a water bottle. Not bad for her first attempt! Later, that same 9 year old won me a new wallet and some reusable grocery bags.
Our 11 year old girls scored on namebrand surfwear items and our nine and three year old sons tried every booth and climbing wall. Ezra, our one year old, lived the day in his stroller, watching everyone move freely about him. We did a lot of walking. Needless to say I was exhausted at the end of the day and my joints had started acting up.
However, dinner was looming and the kids were having a hard time settling down, so we went to the beach. That way I could avoid cooking and cleaning up after 15 people (family + 5 friends). We had a great time relaxing over 8 feet of Subway sandwiches (not gluten free), chips, carrots, and water. The kids played and my husband and I and our friend (recently back from serving in Kuwait) caught up on each others lives. It was a good day.
To top it all off, guess what I wore? A t-shirt I received in the mail that reads “Have you blogged today?” from my web host, Today.com. Too cute!

House Rule
Banner Day For Me and My Blog
Today is a banner day (quite literally) for my blog. As you can see, Amazon.com is now supporting my blog through advertising. Woohoo! I love Amazon (and they didn’t ask me to say that or even mention them, by the way). We have a standing rule in our house.
If Mom is on Amazon, leave her alone.
The reasons for this are many:
Reason #1 Mom is trying to find information and questions to stump her Book Club.
Reason #2 Mom is finding an elusive item (last year it was a Rubik‘s Cube for a science class!).
Reason #3 Mom may be Christmas shopping. Enough said.
And, most importantly:
Reason #4 Mom needs a “pick me up.” Amazon is one of the quickest ways I know to bring a smile to my face when I’m feeling stressed, sad or overwhelmed. I love books - and Amazon doesn’t require me to get in my car to access them! (A definite plus for Fibromites.)
Another reason this is a banner day for me is that I am feeling pretty well today. I’ve been getting more solid hours of sleep and drinking more water, along with eating gluten free for the most part, this week, and it seems to be helping. I was able to volunteer at my daughter’s school today - Yay!

Digging Deeply
Finding Joy
Lately, I’ve had several people question my choice of “happyfibrofamily” as a blog name and “happyfibro” as a handle. Comments have ranged from ”odd” to “Chinese restaurant-like”. Today, however, was the first time someone suggested it as an oxymoron.
While, that may be true for some, I prefer to think of ”happyfibro” as a personal goal. I figure if I can keep a smile on my face (some of the time anyway) while dealing with all of this, then I will be able to stay motivated to find answers and be well. I really believe in finding small joys in my life so that I can be “happy” most of the time, even if I have to be in pain while enjoying them.
A few of the small joys in my life are daily family adventures, listening to my children get along with one another, eating food outside of my home where someone else cooks and cleans up, reading and discussing good literature, membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and catching up with my husband and good friends. When I think about those joys, I realize that I am very blessed and that I have a good life, in spite of my fibromyalgia. Dig deep and think, what are some of your small joys?

Sharing My Spark
I came across a website last night that I had to share with you! It’s called Spark People and is a completely free nutrition and fitness tracker. It even has a weigh-in feature for those who are trying to lose weight. It is filled with interested articles and simple tools for motivation. I choose my motivational goals to be drink 8 glasses of water a day, get 8 hours of sleep each night, and listen to a get-up-and-go song every day as my starting point! The main reason I’m excited about this site, though, is that it has a special message board for people with fibromyalgia. My user name is happyfibro, if you check the message boards. Say hi to me!
