My Daughter Out Ran Me, Teach Kids Health and Fitness
Comments off

I recently wrote about how my wife kicked my butt in a some sprints. I guess it runs in the family because my 3 year old daughter out did me too. Ugh, I don’t know if I should be embarrassed or proud. What the heck, I’m gonna go with being proud.
I had just finished a pretty decent workout when my daughter asked me to run around with her. I figured I would go ahead and show her how to run sprints, especially since my wife and I had been running sprints recently. It wasn’t really meant to be competitive. I just wanted to continue educating her on health and fitness. She happens to love exercise. She likes eating broccoli and celery too.
So how did I teach her about sprints? I first told her about high intensity exercises and how they help me get in shape and gain strength. I then went about it like a game, the first to the other side wins. What we do is run a sprint then count to ten (reinforcing what she learns in school) and run another sprint. We do this about 10 times, or in this case I do 6 and she runs 14. By the time I got to 3 I was burnt out and couldn’t even go full speed. Normally I would let my daughter win but I couldn’t even fake it, I was really being beaten by my 3 year old.
Afterwards we drank water, walked around and did some total body stretching. I have been slowly adding different exercises to her repertoire. A few months ago it was push ups, a few weeks after that it was squats. Then we started stretching and yoga. She likes the stretching a lot since she can dictate and make up her own stretches as we go. Maybe I have a future Personal Trainer in the making?
I always enjoy spending time with my daughter and being able to share health knowledge makes it all the better.
For those parents, guardians, uncles, aunts, teachers, etc out there: What are some things you do to teach your kids about health and fitness?

Pushups: Another Reason to Not Email Anyone

My buddy Chato from Mental Health Humor put together another health cartoon. This time he pokes fun at my Blogger Proof Workout where I give advice on doing a certain amount of pushups for every email you send and receive. If you haven’t already, check it out. It’s a quick read.
Imagine if you combine the Blogger Proof Workout with that 100 pushup challenge that was making its rounds in the health blogosphere a while back. Yikes! Makes you think twice about checking those emails…

Final Video Thoughts on Isagenix Cleansing Program
Comments off
I recently completed a day 30 cleanse from Isagenix. Someone I know recommended it with high praise so I decided to give it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised with the results, losing 15 lbs and several inches around my waist in the 30 days.
While I had success with I really know that I would be able to maintain a lifestyle of drinking shakes for a large portion of my calories. I like to eat. Period. I think the 9 day Isagenix cleanse is a good catalyst for dropping weight and getting your mind right, but only for that short period of time. The first two weeks were great all around. Mentally and physically I felt amazing. During the 3rd week I started getting “tired” of drinking shakes and just wanted it to be over. That is why I recommend the 9 day cleanse. The shakes taste good and fill you up, so you aren’t getting that starving feeling.
This concludes my test of the Isagenix system, which is pretty pricey for some folks but it all depends on how you look at things. I’m getting back to basics, eating more fruit and veggies, taking whey protein (and eating it too), and just eating healthier overall.

5 Steps for Moms to Get Rid of Pregnancy Weight
Comments off

So 9 months (maybe more, maybe less) of sheer H-E double hockey sticks and sheer agony, you’re a proud new mommy. It’s a great thing and a time to celebrate, but once the hype dies down and you look at yourself…you wonder how the heck you are going to get rid of that belly?
There are a few simple things post-pregnancy women can do, and it’s all common sense! You’ve probably heard all these from your doctor, but I’ll restate them anyway!
1. Walk your baby!
Pretty simple, really. Your baby loves to see the world, get fresh air, or to just snooze on a walk. Throw them in a stroller and take a walk twice a day, it gets you out of the house and is great exercise! (Don’t really throw them in, place them down gently.)
2. Eat Right!
Eating correctly couldn’t be more important anytime in your life, especially for new mothers breast feeding. Now is not the time to start the Atkins diet! You and your baby, need carbs and fats, so eat healthy and so will your baby! If you haven’t kicked the chips, pop, and candy habit now would be a good time to try!
3. Midnight Snack…
Hormonal women have a tendency to want some very strange things. I’ve witnessed this myself, especially being awoken at 3:00 AM sharp, to find my wife locked onto me with a death-ray stare. Followed by a trip to the store for Key-Lime Pie and Fire Red Dorito’s (a trigger food of mine, by the way). Try to keep these cravings at bay! Food at night is barely used, you’re not actively burning calories. So, it gets stored as fat!
4. Baby Weight!
Most women take for granted, during pregnancy, how much blood, sweat, and tears is involved with an infant. Running here, running there, baby’s crying. Some are lucky enough to have a 2-story house, with the baby’s room upstairs. Think of this as exercise! You can make up to 50 trips up and down the stairs every day, that’s a lot of cardio! Or just walking around the house after your toddler. Don’t just plop down on the coach and waist away for hours on end.
5. Set Goals!
Setting goals for yourself to overcome both acts is a good way to record your progress, but also gives you something to “shoot for” week by week. Knowing a challenge and trying to overcome it can bring out the best in people, so set yourself a list of goals to overcome and start crossing them off one-by-one! Things like weight goals, fitting into your favorite pair of pants, cutting a few inches off your waist are a start. Be specific and stay on top of your book keeping!
With these simple steps most women can be back to themselves in no time at all! Be careful and always talk to your doctor before starting any new weight loss program, and think about safety. If you’ve still got stitches healing, you probably shouldn’t try upside down hanging sit-ups!
Currently Pregnant or Expecting?
For those moms-to-be out there, I didn’t forget about you, it’s probably wise of you to start eating healthier and exercising now. It will make your pregnancy and recovery a whole lot easier! Simply walking everyday or doing some pregnancy-safe yoga is better than nothing.
Any more tips from moms out there, such as breast feeding? Please share them!

I’m Done with Weekly Weigh-Ins and the Scale
Comments off
I am officially done weighing-in on a weekly basis. After last Monday’s disappointing weigh-in where I only lost 1 lb, I have decided to stop focusing on the scale. Not reaching my goal of being under 300 lbs on Monday hit me real hard. I had been expecting to reach that milestone and when I didn’t, I felt like a failure. I know, I know. I am not a failure, I lost weight and that’s positive..yada, yada.
I will still weigh myself once a month or so and report on that like normal, but will stop focusing on the numbers on the scale. One thing that worries me about making this decision is that I did this in the past and failed miserably at it, gaining back several pounds. This time around I need to continue to make the right food choices and workout like a mad man! My workouts have been awesome for the past couple of months, so that should be easy to maintain. But the eating part has always been my Achilles heal. I love food. Loving food makes it hard for me to eat properly. I think I can do it though, so it shouldn’t be that big a deal.
What will I use now that I won’t be using the scale as my primary measuring tool? My body. Yep. I will be going with how I feel, how my body feels, how I look, how I fit into clothes, and what people notice about me physically. That’s my main tool for now. For example, I just started noticing some veins bulging on the back of my hands when I make a fist. I hadn’t seen those veins in a long time and it felt good to see them. Some other things I noticed where my pants feeling baggier, a closet full of 8 pairs of jeans to be exact.
Katrina, an Exercise Physiologist and Health Promotion Specialist from Ohio, recently contacted me and provided me with some other good options for measuring my body fat. She advised that I use a reliable method such as underwater weighing, skinfold analysis/calipers (a good, expensive set and someone that knows what they’re doing), or the Bod Pod. I have never used either, but plan to as soon as time permits. Thanks again for the advice, Katrina.
Lastly, I finally had a physical done for the first time in about 7 years. The doc said that I have high blood pressure and should work on reducing it. Ugh…why do I need to have high blood pressure? Damn! Every thing else seemed fine for now but she wants me to to go in next week to test for diabetes…

Sad Day in the Fat Man House: Only 1.3 Lbs Lost
Comments off
Yes folks, I am extremely disappointed. Today is a sad day in the Fat Man Unleashed household. I am semi-depressed actually. I weighed-in today at 301 lbs…
That’s right. Only 301 lbs. That means I only lost 1.3 lbs. last week. While losing any amount is good, I was really hoping to break the 300 mark today. I was sure that I would be at least 298 lbs, especially after the awesome week I had. I was rocking the workouts and reaching new levels but it wasn’t meant to be. My eating was also pretty damn in control too.
I do feel better physically, look better and some people are beginning to notice the weight loss. Maybe I am losing fat and gaining some muscle weight? I don’t know for sure. Maybe I will find out this week when I visit the doctor for the first time in a long time.
I am going to keep it short since I am feeling crappy about not reaching my first major goal…

Working Out with the Misses, I Love HER!!!
Comments off
I don’t usually write about my wife on here, but today is an exception. Why? Because she rocks. Back when we were dating and in college, we would work out together and I used to love sharing that with her. It was something we did to relax and bond. So flash forward to now and the fact is that we just don’t workout together anymore.
That all changed a few days ago. I had just finished working out and was about to run some sprints. She was making dinner and had mentioned that she needed to workout but didn’t have enough time. That’s when I asked her to run some sprints with me. She agreed, and in doing so reignited a flame in us that had long ago been put out.
So we went to the backyard and ran some sprints. She out did me. Granted, I had just finished a pretty intense workout, but she kicked my butt anyway. I was nearly about to pass out but she was able to compose herself throughout the whole thing. We even had a bet, which I lost. I ended up having to do some push ups.
She is so tough that she decided to do push ups too! She amazes me. I forgot how in shape and determined my wife was, not just with exercise but with everything in life. Man do I love her (if you are reading this, I LOVE YOU).
This all just made me realize how much I enjoyed working out with her and how easy it was to incorporate that back into our lives. Those 20 minutes were priceless.
Next time you are about to workout, ask your partner to join you…

4.5 Lbs Lost and Monthly Weight Loss Pictures

Well, today was that time…weekly weigh-in time. I had missed last weeks weigh-in and was eager to find out my weight this week. I had been thinking about this for a whole two weeks and am glad it’s over, if at least for a week. Unfortunately, I did not break the 300 lb mark, but I think that next week will be a milestone in my weight loss journey. Let me stop getting ahead of myself and focus on the now. So, My official weight as of today is 302.3 lbs, which is a total of 4.5 lbs lost since my last weigh-in. Not too shabby in my opinion.
That brings my total weight loss to 12 lbs since I started the 30 day Isagenix cleanse. As usual, I am taking my Isalean shakes twice a day and eating one 500 to 600 calories meal for lunch. Sometimes the meal is more around 350 to 400 lbs, but I make sure it is both satisfying and nutritious. I have great energy levels and my workouts are starting to go to the next level (I will make a post on this new “level” I am talking about soon). The only downside, in my case, about Isagenix, is that I feel semi-constipated. What I mean is that I am using the bathroom regularly, but I feel as though I am not finished. Get what I mean?
I have also updated my weight loss chart and am proud to announce that I am at the lowest I have been in several years. While it’s not quite sub 300, I am confident that next week I will reach my first major goal of reaching 299 lbs (it’s been a long time coming).
I finally took my monthly weight loss pictures. It has been a long time, but I am re-dedicating myself to taking monthly photos of my evolution. This time around there is a slight difference in the fat on my body, nothing major, but it’s a little noticeable. I still have major fat folds going on, but they are starting to subside. I feel a lot better than I did a few months ago and am glad that I have taken steps in the right direction. See the photos below. WARNING: Man boobs and fat folds aplenty are coming up!!!
