Complacency causes Catastrophe

Complacency causes catastrophe in every aspect of human existence.

She was a nurse by profession. Her husband was a decorated member of the armed services with a history of being physically and mentally fit.  After his commitment to the service, he worked in a factory.  Now in his retirement, he has become complacent.

She wondered, what can she do to motivate him?  She is afraid there is an impending doom for her husband.

Her husband has lost the focus for caring for himself.  He approaches morbid obesity.  Family members have expressed their concern about his weight, health and mental state.  All the efforts of others have been ineffective.  He doesn’t get it!

Why do people miss warning signs?  How can you stop people you care about from being complacent or in denial?

We know urgency, passion and commitment results in success, when warning signs are recognized.  Once people have a sense of urgency with passion and commitment to take care of themselves, the effects of complacency are reversed.

In order to motivate her husband, she realized that her husband needed to realize that changes were not only necessary, but absolutely crucial to his health and happiness.

People develop a sense of urgency about their lives, when they realize that changes are absolutely crucial to their life and happiness.

Unfortunately, people usually develop a sense of urgency and realize that changes are absolutely crucial, following a catastrophe, caused by complacency.

This woman knows her husband is on course to have a stroke or heart attack.  She can’t prevent it.  Why does he have to have a heart attack, before he realizes that eating healthy, exercising, following doctor’s recommendations, and having meaningful goals in his life are absolutely crucial to his health and well-being?

I suggested that she asked her husband, "What more has to happen to him before he can answer enough is enough"?

She needs to ask her husband "If he has to have a heart attack, stroke or paralysis before he can realize that his health is absolutely crucial to his life and happiness".

It is important for her husband to develop his sense of urgency about the warning signs in his life.  She can’t do that for her husband.  It is important and necessary for her husband to realize that his health and happiness are absolutely crucial for him.

Until her husband realizes that eating properly and exercising, for example, are absolutely crucial for his life and happiness, the efforts of his family are doomed to fail.

Today, take a look at your life and listen to what your friends and family are telling you.  Are you missing warning signs?  Are you lacking a sense of urgency and self-care in your life?
